Library Services for Distance Learners
We know from experience that time is of the essence for our distance learners. As you cannot easily visit the Library to obtain books or journals, the Library has a large selection of both available to you electronically − approximately 38,000 e-books and 17,000 e-journals.
The library subject directory has relevant resources and contains:
- 200+ databases, which act as indexes to many academic sources (including statistics, law reports, legislation and financial data)
- another route into e-journals and newspapers (from secure, stable sources rather than from the open web)
- quality websites selected as relevant to University courses
The Occupational Health and Safety subject page includes links to the full text database Occupational Health and Safety Information Service (OSHIS) and OSH update database, as well as many relevant e-journals.
Students based in the UK have the opportunity to use a scheme known as SCONUL Access. This allows you to join and borrow as an external reader from other academic libraries located near your home or work at no charge.
Distance learners may request photocopies of single book chapters and single articles from any journal held in stock at Portsmouth. Articles and books not held by the University Library can be obtained on your behalf from another library by the Distance Learners' Support Team.
As well as the subject teams in the University library, the Faculty employs a dedicated librarian to help locate materials for a specific assignment or conducting a literature review. The university has developed a highly acclaimed interactive referencing tool, if the answer to any bibliographic referencing or citation problem is not there the departmental librarian can help.
