Mathematics

About us

The department of Mathematics is part of the faculty of technology at the University of Portsmouth.

History

Part of a University whose origins start in late 19th century, the department has evolved a number of times, two recent ones being one in 1997 when as a Division of Mathematics and Statistics we formed together with the Computer Science Department the School of Computer Science and Mathematics and one in 2002 when the Department was created in its current form.

Location

The Department is located in the Lion Gate Building in the University Quarter of Portsmouth (Guildhall Campus). It is in close proximity with the other buildings of the University and the University Library, and within walking distance from the city centre and the sea.

Courses

We offer both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

At the undergraduate level we offer a B.Sc. in Mathematics and also in Mathematics with a number of other subjects in the areas of Finance and Computing. We also service the Mathematical needs of students majoring in other areas of Science, Technology, and the Humanities.

At the postgraduate level, the Department offers an M.Sc. and an M.Phil./Ph.D.

Graduate Careers

The Department has a long history of our graduates becoming employees in key sectors of national and international companies, industries, government, in the South and elsewhere.

Teaching and Research Quality

Teaching and research are considered equally important and we plan to further build on our recent national recognition successes in the two recent assessment exercises in teaching and research:

  • Teaching Quality Assessment Exercise (TQA) of November 1999 with grade 22/24 (excellent)
  • Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) of 2001 with grades 5 and 4.

Our Research

In the 2001 RAE the Department submitted two entries: An independent entry in the Applied Mathematics Unit of Assessment (UoA 23) with its research group of Mathematical Cosmology (RAE grade 5) and an entry in the Business and Management Unit of Assessment (UoA 43) jointly with the Business School of the University, with the Operations Research Group (RAE grade 4).

The current research interests of the staff members are focused around the following areas of Applied Mathematics: Biostatistics, Financial Mathematics and Operations Research, Nonlinear Dynamics, Numerical Analysis as well as Science and Theology. These areas complement a major research area, Cosmology and Gravitation centred at the ICG.
