Abstract In many different physical systems regular patterns are observed. In this talk I will review some of the ideas from symmetry and bifurcation theory that may be used to understand to what extent features of pattern selection are due to the symmetry of the problem, and to what extent they are due to the specific physical situation. I will conclude with some recent results for pattern selection in a particular experiment known as the Faraday crispation experiment. (Invited by: Dr. Athena Makroglou.) |
