"We all know what we like in music, painting or poetry, but it is much harder to explain why we like it. The same is true of mathematics, which is, in part, an art form."

Sir Michael Atiyah writes a brief article on the beauty of areas of mathematical theory and of individual theorems and proofs in the Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society, Vol. 43, No. 1, Pages 87-88, January 2006.

The department of Mathematics at the University of Portsmouth runs an Annual Festival of Mathematics and Art, hosting many events at the interface of Mathematics and the Arts.

Events include academic workshops and seminars, public film screenings, exhibitions, and lectures, and also events attended by hundreds of school pupils in which they explore and discover the artistic side of mathematics and the mathematical side of art.
