Profile

Gary is a Research student in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Portsmouth and a member of the Logistics and Management Mathematics Group.

Existing research collaboration between PBS and the Management Mathematics Group at the University of Portsmouth, has led to the development of a preliminary multi-objective discrete event simulation model of a port and hinterland network. This novel application of Mathematical modelling in the context of port and maritime economic analysis represents a unique opportunity to understand how future changes in policy, fleet composition, technological development, port location/capacity and performance in individual economies could affect congestion at European ports. If UK ports fail to meet the future demands of their customers they face trade delection and therefore the development of a decision aiding model is justified.

After a period of calibration and performance testing I intend to run a number of mixed scenarios in an attempt to develop the model into a decision adding tool to aid container port traffic policy. The proposed model will simulate the flow of container traffic in European ports but once completed it could easily be transferred to other geographic locations.
