David Whitchurch (accompanied by an Enigma machine) is coming to Portsmouth to speaking about the role of Bletchley Park in World War 2. He will demonstrate the operation of the Enigma cipher machine, explain how the work of Mathematicians at Bletchley Park enabled messages sent using Enigma and the more sophisticated Lorenz SZ42 machine to be deciphered during WW2.
The talks will include the development of the world's first practical electronic digital information processing machine - Colossus.
There are two talks:
Anglesea A2.06 1-2.30pm (for Maths department students & staff)
Lion Gate building room 1.22 from 3-4pm which is open to all staff (and students)

The Wednesday 5 seminar series is open to members of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Portsmouth and, by arrangement, other interested parties within the University. The series is organised by Lynn Pevy.
