Research in Applied Mathematics at Portsmouth rated joint highest in UK at internationally-excellent and world-leading level

In the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008, 75% of the research in Applied Mathematics at Portsmouth was judged to be world-leading or internationally excellent.

The rating system for RAE2008 uses 5 categories:

  • 4* = world-leading
  • 3* = internationally excellent
  • 2* = internationally recognised
  • 1* = nationally recognised
  • * unclassified

75% of the research in Applied Mathematics was judged to be in the 4* and 3* categories. This 4*+3* score is the best in the UK, and is matched only by the universities of Cambridge, Durham and Oxford.

The submission was based on the Department of Mathematics and the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation (ICG), covering research in galaxy formation, dark energy, quantum cosmology and the dynamics of chaotic systems.
