Frequently Asked Questions

Our research studies cover a wide range area of psychological topics including eye witness memory, spotting liars and detecting deception, beauty and facial attractiveness, eye tracking studies, infant and child research and studies into dog cognition.

What will I be expected to do?

The types of studies range from questionnaire or computer based tasks, to eye tracking studies, interviewing techniques and reconnaissance missions.


Where do the studies take place?

Most research projects take place at the University of Portsmouth but it depends on the nature of the project.  The Researcher will make is clear prior to the study where it will take place.


How long are the sessions?

The length of the sessions vary depending on the nature of the project but they are usually between 30 minutes and 2 hours.


Are we paid?

No, but each study is different.  The Researcher will make it clear prior to the study starting if payment is offered.


What happens after you enter your contact details?

Once you provide us with your contact details we would send you information about any ongoing research projects in which you, your child or your pet, may be interested in. Once we have sent you the information you can then decide whether you would like to participate or not. By leaving your contact details you are under no obligation to take part in any of the research studies. 


What happens if I decide not to participate in the studies for which you send me information?

You can accept or decline participating in any of the studies without having to give any reason for your decision. You will not be contacted further about that particular study unless you have registered your interest in that study.


What happens if I decide to participate in a research study?

If you accept to take part, the Researcher will contact you to arrange a visit at a time that is convenient to you, and when applicable, to your child.   You do not have to consent to take part until you have all the information you require about the study, after which time we will ask you to sign an informed consent form.  After the study session, we will give you some feedback. We are also happy to send you a summary of our results at the end of the project.


What if I would like my contact details to be deleted from the database?

If at any point you decide you would like us to delete your contact information from our list, please email us at: Psychology@port.ac.uk  and we will do so. You will not have to provide any explanation for your decision.


How secure is the information I provide?

The contact information you provide in the form below will be stored securely in a password protected database within the university network. Only the research team will be able to access the information.

If you would like to receive information on research opportunities, please use the e-mail address provided below. We will then let you know about any studies. Registering does not commit you to take part in our studies. All information provided will remain confidential and will only be used for the purpose of volunteer participation in research projects conducted by our team and, upon your request, will be deleted at any time.
