Profile

Background

My name is Paul Waby and I live in Portsmouth. Before joining the University in 1989 I spent 18 months at the Portsmouth ITeC YTS scheme studying electronics and computing and doing work placement. On joining the Psychology Department I was sent on part-time courses to complete an ONC, HNC and HND in Computer Studies. I then went on to complete a BSC degree from the Open University doing various computing and technology courses. I graduated in June 2003.

Courses

I am involved in technical support for all course activity in the Psychology Department.

Responsibilities

I am a Senior Technician. As well being a general support to our students and staff I am involved in the support for the Speech and Audio Interactive Lab and the Movement lab. I enjoy writing programs for staff and students to use with their research projects. I am also an administrator to our psychometric test library.

My duties include:

  • Programming for students projects and practicals
  • Psychometric test library
  • Resource purchasing and stock taking
  • Video editing
  • Laboratory booking system
  • IT advice for staff and students
  • PC support to staff and researchers
  • Maintaining labs
  • Instruction of equipment use – eg camcorders, dictaphones, health meters
  • Setting up resources for in-house workshops and conferences
  • Setting up resources for practicals and research studies 
  • Disposal of redundant equipment
  • Portable appliance testing
