Appointed Professor of Risk and Crisis Management in January 2005 Edward's interests include: risk, crisis and security management, risk and human behaviour, disaster response, socio-technical systems failure, corporate risk and business continuity, security and resilience, terrorism, transport risks in particular rail, ethnographic research and simulations and games for training. Edward has worked extensively over the past 15 years with the emergency services, local and central government agencies and large businesses.
Edward's PhD thesis was based on simulation training for complex inter-organisational response to crises among the UK emergency services.

- Crisis Management training in UK, France, Spain and Italy on a European Union funded project at London University.
Currently, Edward is developing a new Centre for Risk, Crisis and Security Management at the University of Portsmouth and a new MSc available by attendance or distance learning in October 2006. Prior to joining the University of Portsmouth, Edward developed and directed MSc programmes in Corporate Risk and Security Management at Southampton University, and an MSc in Risk, Crisis and Disaster Management by distance learning at Leicester University. Edward is also a visiting Professor at Southampton University and the Resilience Centre, Royal Military College of Science, Cranfield University.
Edward publishes in a range of key refereed journals, and recently authored a new book entitled 'Risk, Crisis and Security Management' (published by John Wiley and Sons). Edward appears frequently in the media, on BBC television and Radio and also a variety of independent broadcasting networks and major daily journals.
