Profile
| BA (Hons) (Portsmouth) | PhD (Portsmouth) |
I have taught at the University of Portsmouth since 1996, initially within the School of Art, Design and Media. Since 2006, I have worked largely within the Film department of SCAFM, but I continue to teach on Media units, mainly in areas of applied writing.
All of my activities to date, either in teaching or research, have been led by the need for University life to make contact with worlds outside of the classroom – I feel rather haunted by the double meaning of the word ‘academic’ (meaning either ‘scholarly’ or ‘expendable’). I believe that knowledge should be applied and I also believe that critical ‘thinking’ and ‘doing’ should take place side-by-side. My writing to date has been dominated by my interest in the applied art of film production design. By the same token, I teach skills of journalism and scripting as the means of applying words to particular demands and audiences. Much of my critical work is given to analysing the institutional and economic determinants of media and cultural production.
