Geotechnics Laboratory

The Geotechnics Laboratory was fully refurbished over the winter of 2009 / 2010 at a cost of £300,000. The laboratory is equipped with a suite of fully automated testing equipment which is used for both undergraduate and post graduate teaching and research. There is also a dedicated 60 seater interactive tutorial area.

 

The Geotechnics laboratory equipment is used to fully characterise both fine and coarse grained soils.

Included apparatus:
  • Liquid Limit Drop Cones

  • 300mm and 200mm sieves

  • Compaction and CBR test equipment

  • Constant Head and Falling Head Permeameters

  • Direct Shear boxes (60 x 60mm and 100 x100mm)

  • Hydraulic Shear box (300 x 300mm)

  • One Dimensional Consolidation Test cells (75mm)

  • Triaxial test rigs capable of testing a range of sample diameters from 38mm to 100mm., for both undrained and effective stress deteremination

    • Fully automated Bromhead Ring Shear Machines

    • Seepage/Flow Net Tank

    • Advanced Triaxial Stress Path Cell setups
