The School of Civil Engineering and Surveying
Materials Laboratory |
Our materials laboratory is used for research and undergraduate and postgraduate project work. It is equipped with a large fume cupboard and extraction hood as well a range of equipment for chemical and physical testing of materials.
The laboratory is primarily used for preparation and testing of highway material samples, but is also used for testing other civil engineering materials, such as cement and concrete.
Our undergraduate and MSc students use this laboratory for individual project work such as investigating fire resistance of concrete made with lightweight aggregate, measuring skid resistance of paving blocks and chemical analysis of hardened concrete. PhD research based in the materials laboratory includes investigation of the thermal properties of concrete containing recycled glass.
