The School of Civil Engineering and Surveying

Surveying/Fieldwork

Our Survey Store houses a full range of equipment for Civil Engineering surveying including:

  • 40 theodolites
  • 40 automatic levels
  • 6 total stations
  • Laser level
  • Differential GPS system

In the first year of all our courses, students learn levelling techniques and measurement of angles using automatic levels and theodolites.  The Survey Store is open for students to borrow this equipment to gain practical experience during timetabled sessions and develop their skills at their own pace.

In the second year, Civil Engineering students have an opportunity to develop these skills further through the Fieldwork for Civil Engineers optional unit where we take a group of students to the National Construction College site at Bircham Newton, Norfolk.  This is a weeklong residential trip where students undertake tasks in setting out of new buildings and highways.  The trip also includes a tour around the college site highlighting aspects of real construction sites such as tower crane erection, scaffolding, heavy earth moving equipment and onsite health and safety issues.
