Profile
Prior to joining the University of Portsmouth’s School of Environmental Design and Management, Dr. Whitehead had a 30+ year career as a town planning, transport and environmental executive and practitioner, in a wide range of public and private sector organizations in the United Kingdom and Canada. A Chartered Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP), he holds a doctorate in the link between transport charging interventions and economic activity from the University of Oxford’s Transport Studies Unit. He began his career in Canada where he completed bachelor and masters degrees in town planning and environmental planning and management, and a diploma in municipal management and administration. Dr. Whitehead’s experience has spanned urban and regional planning, sustainable transport, urban regeneration, property development services, urban design, and environmental impact assessment.
Today, Dr. Whitehead's primary research, consulting and teaching interests are in town planning, sustainable transport and the impact of environmental quality improvements on regeneration, business and economic activity. He takes a special interest in design for sustainable cities, land use / transport interaction, and organisational ‘trouble-shooting’ projects. Outside of the university and his academic and professional interests, Dr. Whitehead enjoys swimming, yoga, music, history and travel.

Dr. Whitehead teaches town planning, regeneration, urban design and transport themes on the MSc Property Development, the BSc (Honours) Property Development, and the BSc (Honours) Property, Marketing, Design and Development.
