FdA Early Years
The Foundation Degree in Early Years is a well established programme for practitioners working with children aged 0-8. It was developed in response to the Government’s increasing focus on the quality of provision for the children in their early years.
Students attend university for 1 session per week during term time and need to be working for at least 12 hours a week in the Early Years sector in order to carry out the work based aspects to this award
The programme of study aims to provide a step on the pathway to enhanced professional practice by building on the experience and commitment students bring with them and facilitating further development of professional knowledge and understanding. The FdA provides a clear pathway to both the Early Years Professional Status (EYPS) and to Qualified Teacher Status.
Students are able to access online, telephone and campus based support.
What will I study?
As a practitioner focussed degree, all units will relate directly to your professional role. In particular you will focus on your own professional development through several online units that enable discussion, reflection and access to a range of study skills resources.
* Access to a computer and the internet is essential for these elements of the degree, and if not available at home, students will need to plan in time to use the university facilities. IT skills will be developed during the course and expertise is not essential to begin.
Year 1 starts with a focus on the work with children and considers how to plan for learning and development, and how to develop effective partnerships with parents. These subjects are looked at within a framework of current legislation and practice, research evidence and historical influences.
Year 2 looks at the wider environment with consideration given to team work, professional collaboration and safeguarding children. There are also units on using information for decision making and ICT and the early years.
Year 3 gives the opportunity for in depth study of child development with a unit on cognitive and psycho-social development. You also undertake a practitioner based enquiry enabling focus on a specific area of interest.

Where will it take me?
There are many new and developing opportunities within Early Years and Education as a result of Every Child Matters (2003). Successful completion of the FdA will demonstrate to an employer that you have the capability to work at a high academic level and the persistence to work successfully on an extended project. You can show qualities of team work as well as the ability to be self motivated.
If you are interested in continuing to study there are a number of routes open to you.
The Early Years Professional Status (long route) enables you to study an additional 60 credits at level 6 as well as undertaking the validation for the status.
Alternatively if you are seeking a route into teaching you can progress to the BA (Hons) Educational Studies and then apply for a course leading to Qualified Teacher Status.
