Research, Consultancy and Knowledge Transfer Profile

SECS offers the research degrees of M.Phil. and Ph.D. as well as several taught Masters degrees which include a significant research component. Programmes of research, subject to staff supervisory availability, may be followed in :

  • Teaching and learning processes
  • Special educational needs
  • Post 16 education and training
  • Curriculum provision in secondary and post-compulsory education
  • Aspects of Initial Teacher Training (ITT).
  • Education management

Academic staff of the department also contribute to the MA in Teaching and Learning (Higher Education), which is designed as a professional qualification for those teaching in universities and colleges.

Over a number of years the SECS has also evolved a style of educational research. This is referred to as Practitioner Based Enquiry and work completed within this style has begun to impact on educational policy at a regional and national level in areas as diverse as secondary school curriculum provision, post-registration nurse education, police training and staff development and retraining for the Post 16 (FE) sector and the armed forces.

Academic staff are also involved in a wide range of consultancy and funded knowledge transfer activities. Current projects include work with Portsmouth, Southampton and Hampshire Councils and the Teaching Agency.
