Professional Activities

I have attended the Universities Council for the Education of Teachers (UCET) Post-16 Committee representing the University of Portsmouth, School of Education and Continuing Education since the mid-1990s.  In 2003 I was elected Vice-Chair of that Committee and from July 2005 until July 2008 I served as Chair and as a member of the UCET Executive Committee.  My terms in office coincided with the Government initiating, developing and, more recently, implementing the Further Education teacher education reform agenda.  I played a major leadership role in shaping the UCET position and response to the Government’s proposals and represented UCET at consultation events and in meetings with the DFES/DIUS, Lifelong Learning UK, Standards Verification UK, OfSTED, QCA and QAA.  I was consulted by those organizations on a wide range of issues concerned with the preparation and professional development of staff in the FE/Learning and Skills sector.  I was also invited to meet with Government Ministers  and other senior civil servants to advise on proposals.

When my term of office as Chair of the Post-16 Committee ended in July 2008, I was subsequently elected by UCET members to serve on the UCET Executive for three years.
