Will Medhurst is a senior lecturer in the School of Education and Continuing Studies and has a range of professional experiences and responsibilities. Originally qualified as a teacher, Will has worked in a number of education settings and children's services in England and has particular experience of working with young people who have offended, looked after children and young people with emotional and behavioural problems.
Qualifications
BA (Hons) History with political philosophy - University of Wales, 1993
PGCE Secondary - Southampton University, 1995
MSc Education and training management - University of Portsmouth, 2006
Teaching
Will employs a range of teaching methods across his units including lead lectures, activity-based seminars and audio-visual resources (podcasts, streaming video etc) and online learning. Will encourages a high level of student engagement and enjoys promoting discussion and debate to enhance his students' learning experience.
Responsibilities/Duties
Will is responsible for designing and delivering the following units on the BA (Hons) in Childhood and Youth Studies: Working with children and young people, Inclusion and Diversity in Education, Working with Looked after Children and Youth and Society.
Will teaches on additional units from other courses including Mentoring and Leadership on the BA (Hons) in Education and Training Studies, Professional Collaboration and Safeguarding Children on the FdA in Early Years and Working in Professional Teams on the FdA in Learning Support.
Will is personal tutor to a selection of undergraduates and supervises final year dissertations from a range of undergraduate programmes.
Research Interests
Will has a particular interest in the impact of multi-professional working with children who have emotional and behavioural problems. His MSc research focused on how to bring disaffected young people back into education (and 'functional' society) once they had been excluded from school(s). He is consolidating his proposal for PhD study in a similar area with an additional focus on the impact of multi-agency working on professional identity.
