Earth and Environmental Sciences

RAE 2008
In the 2008 RAE the University of Portsmouth submission in the Earth Systems and Environmental Science category comprised ten researchers in SEES and four from the School of Biological Sciences.
Some 90% of research in the areas of earth and environmental science was deemed to be of international standard, with evidence of world-leading research in both areas.
The School’s mission is to promote excellence in teaching and research across a wide spectrum of Earth and Environmental Sciences. You can use the links on this page to find out more about our degree courses, research and our staff.
We are an interdisciplinary grouping of 24 academic staff, 14 support staff, around 60 postgraduates and 400 undergraduates. The friendly and informal nature of the School is often cited as a key reason for choosing to study here.
In the 2009 National Student Survey, 97 per cent of students were satisfied with their course here, placing us equal 5th in the UK.
All our degree courses include a strong fieldwork component with fieldcourses in the UK and abroad in areas such as Cyprus, Spain, Malta, Tenerife, the Alps and Hong Kong. The costs of these fieldcourses are heavily subsidised.
A distinctive feature of the School is the strong links that we have with industry across the environment, geotechnical, engineering, minerals and oil and gas sectors. Our courses are designed to meet the needs of potential employers and have received professional accreditation from the Geological Society of London and the Institution of Environmental Sciences. Employment prospects for all our degree courses are very strong and we have an excellent employment record. Our graduates were recently ranked as the most employable in the UK in the geology sector.
We offer a range of three year Bachelors undergraduate and one year Masters postgraduate courses. As a student in our School, you will be taught by scientists who are both committed teachers and enthusiastic researchers, and this provides you with the opportunity to participate directly in cutting-edge advances in your chosen subject area.
