The Geotechnics Laboratory at the School of Earth & Environmental Sciences has been completely refurbished at the cost of £350,000 in 2009. The new laboratory is equipped with a suite of fully automated testing equipment which is used for both undergraduate and post graduate teaching and research. The laboratory space has been specifically designed to allow high end research to be carried out in a quality environment. All the standard soil testing equipment used to fully characterise both fine and course grained soils is available including:

  • 6x shear boxes (60X60mm and 100X100mm)
  • large shear box (300X300mm)
  • 6x oedometers (75mm)
  • 4 x triaxial test rigs capable of testing a range of sample diameters up to 100mm – tests capabilities include unconsolidated undrained, consolidated undrained with pore pressure measurement and, consolidated drained with pore pressure measurement
  • 2x fully automated Bromhead ring shear
