Paul HayesThe University of Portsmouth’s Faculty of Science has sponsored the first ever Research and Development Prize presented at the Isle of Wight NHS Awards 2012.

The awards ceremony, which celebrates excellence and innovation in health care on the Isle of Wight, has run since 2008 and seeks to recognise and reward healthcare individuals and groups who are committed to researching, understanding and implementing innovative techniques and processes to improve patient care.

Over 60 entries were nominated across eight subject areas, with a panel comprising of Executive and Non-Executive Directors, staff and patient representatives short listing three per award.

Professor Paul Hayes, Dean of the Faculty of Science, presented the Research and Development Prize on behalf of the University to Clare-Louise Sandell, who investigated the risk of surgical site infections and the experiences of patients who develop infection after a total hip or total knee replacement.

Mrs Sandell, who recently completed her Professional Doctorate in Nursing at the University of Portsmouth, reported on evidence from GPs, consultants, specialist nurses and patients, which have informed a greater understanding of infections affecting patients in the six weeks following their operation. Her thesis will now be used as the basis of identifying where improvements can be made in the post operative care and treatment process.

Awarding the prize, Professor Hayes said “I am delighted to represent the University of Portsmouth and present the first ever Research and Development Award to Clare for her efforts. Continued research in to healthcare topics is vital to ensure we continually develop the latest techniques to improve and deliver patient care to the highest standard. We should continue to emphasise the importance of this and devote time to develop a greater understanding of the issues surrounding healthcare and innovation to ensure progression is made in this field.”
