Earth and Environmental Sciences (SEES)

Centre for Applied Geoscience

The centre brings together applied geoscience research and consultancy activities carried out in SEES, the Department of Geography and the School of Civil Engineering and Surveying (SCES). We specialise in the investigation and management of volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunami, floods and landslides. Members of the team have internationally recognised expertise in the fields of Engineering Geology & Geomorphology, Geotechnical Engineering, Remote Sensing, Disaster Management and Geographical Analyses.

Our aim is to carry out research that has a direct impact upon communities, enabling adaptation to environmental change and improving sustainability of homes, jobs and cultures. We also recognise and actively promote the communication.

Research is supported by the Royal Thai Government, Government of Greece, Ministry of Defence (MoD), North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), Leverhulme Trust, National Environment Research Council (NERC), Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Ordnance Survey. We also carry out commissioned research on behalf of industrial partners.

We focus our efforts into five themes:

       Landslides and Geotechnical Modelling

       Volcanoes, Earthquakes and Tsunami Triggers

       Remote Sensing and Spatial Modelling

       Economic Impact and Social Vulnerability

       Policy Profession and Public Understanding
