School of Health Sciences and Social Work
About us
Variety and Flexibility
The School of Health Sciences and Social Work offers a wide and unique range of courses from degree to PhD and professional doctorate. Our students are from varied backgrounds and may be taking full-time, part-time or short courses. Some are in employment, some are school or college leavers and some are planning a return to work.
We have much to offer and our staff are friendly and approachable. We welcome enquiries so please contact us for information, advice and guidance.
Links with Industry
We have strong links with the local and regional National Health Service Trusts (including the Ambulance Services), the Strategic Health Authority and Social Services. We feel it is important to involve them and other stakeholders in the design and delivery of many of our courses. In this way we ensure that the content and skills our students learn are current and match employers' expectations and needs.
Professional Qualifications
Many of our courses lead to eligibility for professional registration - DipHE in Operating Department Practice, FdSc Paramedic Science, BSc(Hons) Radiography and BSc(Hons) Social Work are prime examples - and these courses are approved by respected national regulatory bodies such as the Health Professions Council and General Social Care Council.
Support for Students
The School has an underpinning ethos of work-based learning and our aim is to work with our students to improve the safety and quality of service to patients and service users in the community. We have a longstanding reputation for excellent student support and some of our courses attract externally-funded bursaries or support with tuition fee payment.
Committed to CPD
Like our students, our staff come from a variety of backgrounds and, where relevant, those with professional standing maintain their own registration through Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities.
Top Quality Course Delivery
We work hard to ensure that our courses have national credibility. In the last quality assurance audit of the School we were awarded the highest possible rating of "Broad Confidence". A full report on the School's activities is available.
We use specialist staff from the workplace to support us in the delivery of our courses, whether Ambulance Service, hospital Emergency Department or Child Protection Agency to ensure that student learning experiences are in line with the best in current practice.
