Senior Lecturer in Social Work, Graham Noyce, has contributed a chapter, “The Mental Health Act and Dual Diagnosis: Public Protection and Legal Dilemmas in Practice”, in a new book, “Risk and Rehabilitation - Management and treatment of substance misuse and mental health problems in the criminal justice system." Editors - Aaron Pycroft and Suzie Clift - Policy Press (2012).
"This book provides an overview of the concept of risk and the issues related to the management and treatment of people with mental health problems. The chapter by Graham Noyce highlights some of the difficulties experienced by service users with a dual diagnosis who come into contact with the criminal justice system and the Mental Health Act. It highlights the arbitrary nature by which service users can be subject to highly variant care pathways which are brought about as a result of professional "diagnosis". This can lead to significantly different life outcomes.
This book and chapter will be useful for a range of practitioners within the field of social work, mental health and criminal justice agencies.
