Profile

Registered Operating Department Practitioner; Cert Ed., BA (Hons) Education, MA Health Professional Education; Registered Practitioner Higher Education Academy.

Penny qualified as an operating department practitioner (ODP) in 1979, and has worked in clinical practice primarily for the NHS until 1996. As a senior practitioner Penny undertook commissioning of anaesthetic services for a new Day Surgery Unit and a Main theatre complex; carried out a skill mix review as an external consultant and gained management experience within the NHS.

Moving into higher education in 1996 has been both rewarding and challenging for Penny but the strong links to clinical areas have strengthened the curriculum development of the ODP programme. Penny has a number of external links including, subject reviewer for QAA major Review, Partner for approvals with the Health Professions Council and Director of Education for the Professional Body Education Committee.

Penny’s interests lie in the quality aspects of curriculum delivery and CPD opportunities for perioperative staff in the operating theatre.
