Biographical Details
I trained at the Manchester Royal Infirmary, qualifying in 1975 and taking up a first position in the Main X-ray department. The immediate appointment to a permanent position rather than to the general rotation afforded the opportunity to work in specialised areas such as angiography and operating theatres, with an opportunity for a short secondment to St Mary’s Hospital for Women and Children, which provided an opportunity to observe experimental obstetric ultrasound examinations.
Career development was achieved by a move to the Royal West Sussex, St. Richard’s Hospital, Chichester, where as a Senior Radiographer, I had the opportunity to work with a local research and development team developing ultrasound scanners. Responsibility for developing obstetric and general diagnostic ultrasound services within the hospital and achieving a postgraduate qualification in ultrasound from St George’s Hospital, Tooting in 1980, offered valuable clinical and managerial experience, allowing me to develop skills, which were advanced by a move outside the National Health Service to Sonicaid Ltd. in 1986.
During the eight years spent in industry, research in the field of ultrasound in the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States of America as an International Product Manager, afforded the opportunity to work with Professor Geoffrey Dawes (Oxford) on the development of computerised assessment of ultrasonic cardiotocography (CTG). The system gained a British Design Award, in 1990.
An investigation of the effectiveness of providing a diagnostic ultrasound service in a primary care setting was the subject of my Masters dissertation in 2001. During the time spent in community medicine, I also developed an interest in bone densitometry and DEXA scanning, which remains my second field of specialist interest.
In January 2005 I joined the Centre for Radiography Education, holding responsibility for the management of five undergraduate units, the Centre timetabling, liaison with external examiners and Chair of the Centre for Radiography Education Assessment Approval Board.
