School of Languages and Area Studies

Ninth Portsmouth Translation Conference

Conference Theme: The translator as writer
Date: Saturday 7 November 2009

Plenary Speakers: Neil Bartlett (author, director and translator)
Jody Byrne (author, Technical Translation)

We all know that it’s important for translators to know foreign languages well; we may even be aware that the most important language for a translator to know well is their own, but we tend to forget that one of the most important skills for a translator is the ability to write. This conference brings together translators, writers and scholars to talk about the different ways in which writing is important for translators. You will also have a chance to take part in hands-on translation workshops on topics including technical writing, journalism, poetry, legal texts and film scripts.

Further details:

The conference fee is £40, £30 for students. Registration is online. The conference venue is Park Building, home of the School of Languages and Area Studies, University of Portsmouth. The conference fee is subsidised by the National Network for Translation for undergraduate students and secondary school teachers. Any enquiries should be sent to the Conference Secretary.

If you have any queries, please contact the Conference Secretary, or the Conference Organiser
