As part of my degree in International Relations and Languages (French), I am spending my Year Abroad working in Dakar, Senegal, as an intern for Plan International. Plan International is an NGO working with communities in 48 developing countries to alleviate child poverty.
I am in charge of translating into English and editing reports sent by the 12 communication offices that Plan International has across francophone West Africa. When reports are approved by my supervisors and their author, I format them, adding photos and captions so they can be published on Plan International’s website.
During my placement, I applied for the 2011 Education Without Borders conference in Dubai. I offered to present a report on gender inequalities in education in Sub-Saharan Africa entitled ‘ The Gender Empowerment and Development Index’. I submitted my proposal and two months later I received an email saying that, out of 720 proposals, mine was one of the 36 to have been selected. I received a travel scholarship to attend the 4-day conference in Dubai in March 2011. Here is the conference website: http://ewb.hct.ac.ae/
