Purple Door Careers and Recruitments Centre: You can access a wide range of help with your research from Purple Door Careers and Recruitment including individual careers advice and access to extensive information resources. Suggested starting points for your research:
- Using your language skills – this information on the Prospects website provides details of your options, specific career areas, case studies, further studies and useful websites. It is available as a booklet from the centre or online on the prospects website.
- Option Series - this series available through the Prospects website provides ideas of what you can do with your degree subject, including details of skills gained, related jobs, further study and other options.
- Working outside the UK - provides information for students and graduates interested in experience of work overseas, either during the vacation or after graduation.
- Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) Survey - provides information on what Portsmouth graduates go on to do after leaving University can provide you with ideas and inspiration when exploring your career options.
- Resources for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences – a section of the Purple Door Careers and Recruitment website dedicated to your faculty.
Career planning and employer activities: throughout the year Purple Door Careers and Recruitment organise a wide range of employer and career planning events, visit the events calendar for further details. The Faculty of Humanities runs an extensive careers programme in Semester 1, covering a wide range of career areas.
Volunteering: voluntary work can help you develop the skills and experience that employers look for. It can provide a stepping-stone to paid experience in an area that interests you. Purple Door Careers and Recruitment can help you find high-level volunteering opportunities in the local area. You can volunteer as an individual or take part in the UPSkill Programme, working on a group project with a local charity. Through the University you can also take part in other excellent community activities such as working as with local school children as an Aim Higher Mentor, or Language e-mentor. Look at the Student Opportunities section of www.port.ac.uk/lookup. The Students Union also offer a wide range of community and other opportunities that will develop your skills. The Student Associate Scheme offers our students paid work experience in schools. All these provide an excellent experience for those interested in teaching, but also develop the skills needed for any job.
Work Experience and Graduate Jobs: Whether you are looking for casual work to fund your degree, or experience related to your future career plans, or opportunities after you graduate Purple Door Careers and Recruitment can help you with advice and access to opportunities.
Electives: A wide range of ‘employability’ based electives is available to students across the University which can be taken instead of course related options. These units cover areas such as enterprise; languages; sports coaching and the Learning through Experience (LiFE) Unit.
Careers in the Curriculum/Personal Development Planning: Your degree course will provide the opportunity for you to develop and reflect on the skills you will need both for your course and after graduation. Through Careers in the Curriculum you will also be able to start researching your career goals while you are a student.
Other help: You can access a wide range of other help from Purple Door Careers and Recruitment including CV help at our weekly CV Wednesday sessions, individual careers advice and access to extensive information resources. You are able to access our services for five years after you graduate.
