Mission Statement

The mission of the University of Portsmouth is to aim for excellence in the creation, interpretation and communication of knowledge. With this in mind, the Department of Sport and Exercise Science has an overriding objective to provide a high quality and satisfying educational experience within a stimulating and supportive environment, whilst conducting nationally and internationally recognised research.

Department Aims

The Department has developed a set of aims in support of its overriding objective. These are to:

Departmental

  • continue to provide an exciting, stimulating and challenging educational provision for students, involving them in our academic community
  • review and strengthen our profile of courses to ensure appropriateness to the wider community and employment needs

Teaching

  • enable students to develop knowledge and understanding of scientific principles through the study of sport, exercise and health
  • produce graduates with a firm theoretical and practical grounding in their subject area
  • provide students with choice within a flexible curricula framework
  • equip students with a broad range of academic, personal development and enterprise skills
  • develop links between the scholarly interests of staff and the curriculum
  • prepare students for future employment or advanced study

Research / Knowledge Transfer

  • continually develop its international research presence
  • achieve increased variety in its sources of research income
  • continue to have an influence on the key sport, exercise and health issues that influence the local and national community
