Profile

Background

Geoff has a BEng (Hons) in Electronic Engineering from Plymouth University and joined the department in 2008 following a 15 month round-the-world trip. This position provided a change of focus for his technical and creative skills as formerly he worked for wide variety of engineering companies from small research groups, to the large multinationals of IBM and BAE Systems. This eclectic mix included the design and development of software, electronics and mechanics of ultrasonic gas meters, a rapid transit railway, disk drives and torpedo systems. Geoff is a keen cyclist, sailor and windsurfer and has travelled and volunteered abroad extensively.

Responsibilities

Maintenance of the environmental physiology laboratory, including humidity, temperature and hypoxic systems. Assistance of PhD researchers in their investigations and the design/development of bespoke equipment both for them and commercial contracts. Specification and procurement of new facilities such as radiant heat source, thermographic camera and a hyperbaric system. The role also involves IT support, photography, animation and graphic design. His commercial experience together with a gift instilled by his scientific father to build things (mainly from junk!), provides the ideal mix required to solve the myriad of technical issues and equipment requirements of the department.
