Profile

Background

Miss Milligan joined the University of Portsmouth in March 2008 as a Research Assistant and PhD student, focusing on developing and validating the fitness standards for the Oil and Gas industry and HM Coastguards. Gemma is now a Senior Lecturer within the department and is responsible for the units Introduction to Fitness Training and Assessment (first year), Training Programmes for Sports Performance (MSc) and Applied Research Methods (MSc). Her research remains in the area of Occupational Physiology with work beginning in 2010 to develop a fitness standard for the shore crew of the RNLI. Gemma is also currently working as a Strength and Conditioning Coach for a National 2 rugby club.  Previous employment was at the Environmental Medicine Unit at the Institute of Naval Medicine (INM) for 4 years as a Scientific Officer (Occupational Physiology). She has a BSc (Hons) in Sports Science and an MSc in Exercise Physiology. Gemma is an accredited BASES Sports Scientist and a SAQ Trainer.

Teaching Responsibilities

Gemma is currently responsible for the Introduction to Fitness Training and Assessment (first year), Training Programmes for Sports Performance (MSc) and Applied Research Methods (MSc).

Research Interests

Gemma's research focuses on designing fitness standards for the RNLI, HM Coastguards and the Oil and Gas Industry and the impact of extreme environments on the ability of individuals to perform their job.
