Background

Kieren McEwan is a Portsmouth graduate having completed a BSc (Hon) in Sports Development in 2004. He continued his studies in Portsmouth by completing a PGCE in Post Compulsory Education through the School of Education and Continuing Studies in 2005 and following this Kieren worked in a further education college in West London as course coordinator, returning to the University of Portsmouth in January 2007 as a lecturer in Sports Development. Outside academia Kieren’s interests are in the field of adventurous outdoor activities where he enjoys mountaineering, mountain biking and snowboarding as well as more traditional sports such as cycling, tennis and football.

Teaching Responsibilities

Kieren currently teaches on the undergraduate Sports Development program and his lecturing focuses on the societal issues surrounding sport. He currently co-ordinates the level on study skills unit as well as two units at second year level (Sports Policy & Funding and Sport & Society) and three in the third year (Sport & the Law, Comparative Sports Provision and Developing Adventure Sports). Kieren is currently supervising students completing dissertations at undergraduate and postgraduate level on topics ranging from schools sports through to gender and identity in adventurous activity.

Research Interests

Kieren’s research interests focus on the commoditisation and appeal of extreme and adventurous sport and the development of dynamic identities among the practitioners of sports such as mountain biking, surfing and skate boarding. His interests extend to the historical development of these sports and the influence these sports have on popular culture and their place within modern society. Kieren also holds interests in the field of teaching and learning having completed a postgraduate project on assessment and achievement among undergraduate sports students.
