Profile
Background
Tom Webb joined the department in 2006 and is currently a senior lecturer in sports development. Tom obtained his undergraduate and masters degrees from the university of Gloucestershire and is currently undertaking a PhD. Tom has worked in the sports development sector before taking up the role at the university, with both Bristol City Council and Hampshire County Council where he project managed a workplace activities scheme. Outside of academia Tom enjoys playing and watching sports such as football and squash.
Teaching Responsibilities
Tom currently teaches sports development and related subjects on our undergraduate degree pathways. He is unit coordinator for Sports Event Organisation and Event Management in Sport as well as contributing to Sports Development Principles, Sport and Society, Comparative Sports Provision, Research and Philosophy in Sports Development and Research Applications in Sports Management. Tom also supervises undergraduate dissertations and research projects.
Research Interests
Tom’s main area of research currently is refereeing in football. Tom’s research has considered refereeing drop out rates in football and refereeing training and retention. Currently Tom’s research focuses on the differences in training and experience between referees and associations within Europe and the potential impact that cultural differences have on referee development. Tom’s research considers the effect of globalisation on sport and football and the impact that this has had, particularly on refereeing.
