History research

Portsmouth has a strong record in historical research and publication, and offers a productive and supportive environment to academic staff and doctoral students alike.  Areas of interest range from war narratives in society to the cultural place of taxidermy in country estates, and from religious persecution to industrial history.

Our academic staff are members of the University's research centre CEISR, among the largest of its kind in the UK.  Current research projects include work on Naval Port Towns and Urban Cultures, Dockyard Workers in Edwardian England, and Dickens 2012: Victorian Issues and Contemporary Contexts.  We host and attend seminars, conferences and symposia, and encourage PhD students to attend where possible.
