School of Social, Historical and Literary Studies

Undergraduate study in History

As an undergraduate studying history at Portsmouth, you will be learning about a fascinating subject from research-active experts in the field, in an environment that has been praised by external auditors and the National Student Survey.

The emphasis of your course lies on the social and cultural history of Britain and Europe from the early modern period, with due attention given to the experiences and perceptions of ordinary men and women involved in the transformations and revolutions of life through industrialisation, war or the rise of political movements.

The department has strong links with the heritage industry, allowing us to offer opportunities of working with local museums and libraries to students interested in this sector.  Students interested in related topics, such as politics or English, may study a combined honours degree.  A full list appears below.
