June Purvis, Professor of women’s and gender history in CEISR, will speak in the Palace of Westminster today about the women’s suffrage movement in Edwardian Britain at an event chaired by Baroness Massey of Darwen.

She says “It is hard to imagine today that over 100 years ago, women could not vote and could not be Members of Parliament – nor even enter the House of Commons. Women were outside the parliamentary democratic process and, during the later stages of the campaign, even barred from holding meetings. To all those women who endured hardship for our right to vote in elections today, I say a big thank you.”
