Sociology

Sociology at Portsmouth is grounded in the rapidly-changing world of the twenty-first century. As information technology, ecological pressures, and global transport networks transform our experience of today and our expectations of the future, sociology's long-standing attention to our lives as human beings makes it vital to our understanding of the world.
Our academic staff are enthusiastic about sharing this understanding through their teaching, and about expanding the field of knowledge through socially and politically relevant research and publication. Undergraduate students of sociology can, therefore, expect to find up-to-the-minute material taught by approachable lecturers, whether in a single-honours course or one of several joint honours programmes, while postgraduates can enjoy a vibrant research environment.
The subject provides strong skills in analysis, communication and the management of information that can be used in many future careers.
