Background
John studied for a BA at Sussex University and MA and PhD degrees at Essex University. His thesis was on the history and social construction of the categories of youth and adolescence.

Present Research
John is presently conducting research into the area of youth and social exclusion and the construction of youth as a social problem.
Undergraduate Teaching
Teaches core course on introductory sociology, and teaches on a core Culture & Society course. John also offers options on Sociology of Youth and Social Problems and Moral Panics. John is presently senior admissions tutor for the Sociology degree.
Higher Degree Teaching/Supervision
Teaches on a variety of MA courses and offers PhD supervision in the area of youth studies.
