Student Enterprise @ Purple Door

Overview:

Falling Pixel are a Limited company formed in 2005 by Jonathan Lloyd and Nathan Hornby, both highly motivated students studying Computer Animation BSC (HONS).

The decision to start a company came after Jonathan and Nathan were commissioned by the University of Portsmouth to create a Virtual Reality environment for the Forensics Department; their primary task was to model the scene in 3D.  Jonathan and Nathan then started working as Freelance Artists creating digital assets and noticed the lack of a European hosting, publication and marketing solution for digital artists.  The decision was then made to form their own online solution for freelance artists and studios.

The service provides the Computer Graphics industry with a marketplace for digital assets, primarily 3D Models.  All of the products are owned and submitted by members of the service; Falling Pixel have recruited some of the world’s best freelance artists and studios.

Portsmouth Centre for Enterprise:

Jonathan and Nathan approached the Portsmouth Centre for Enterprise with an aim to realise their business potential.  To help develop their business, Falling Pixel received £1000 SEED fund grant from the University, which supported the construction of their service.  They also received the runner up prize in the business category of the Stage One 2007 Enterprise Challenge competition.  The prize money was used to help fund the ongoing costs of running their business.

Falling Pixel are now based in the Portsmouth Centre for Enterprise where they are provided with important business links, resources, advice and guidance.  They are also committee members on ‘Club Sandwich’;  this is a student enterprise club, run by students for students who are interested in enterprise or want to start up their own business.

Future Development:

Falling Pixel have plans to expand their service to reach new and diverse markets.  This includes an outsource program whereby artists are sourced for specific projects.  This service will allow businesses to potentially find any 3D creation they require, whilst taking into consideration their budgets and deadlines.

Other projects include putting into operation their new research division, which will focus on generating and collecting much needed data and statistics about the CG industry.
