Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries (CCI)
Who is moving?
The new building will bring together on one site the four schools that comprise the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries. These are:
- Portsmouth School of Architecture
- School of Art Design and Media
- School of Creative Technologies
- School of Creative Arts, Film and Media.
The new building is designed to act as a catalyst for multidisciplinary exchange and interdisciplinary development in the fields of study within the Faculty of Cultural and Creative Industries. The overall design aesthetic has conceived of the buildings as free-flowing, flexible and responsive providing a spatial configuration that will support the Faculty's commitment to the provision of excellence in learning and teaching within the domains of the creative and cultural industries.
The new building will also provide a central focus for the public staging, exhibition and performance of student work as well as external clients: the conception of the building as a dynamic social space with appropriate facilities to support extra-curricular discourse is key to a vision in which opportunities for movement between fields of knowledge production, collaborative creativity and the incubation of areas of creative application are secured.
Schools and departments
While plans are still being finalised for the Eldon campus, the School of Art, Design and Media and the School of Creative Technologies will be affected in some way by the construction of the new building and the integration of the School of Creative Arts, Film and Media and the Portsmouth School of Architecture onto the Eldon campus.
The new building will add just over 3000 square metres of usable space to the Eldon campus. This includes new spaces such as exhibition spaces, cafe, a large lecture theatre and a number of classrooms. For purposes of comparison the current Arts Cafe in Eldon is approximately 250 square metres in size.
The School of Creative Arts, Film and Media and the Portsmouth School of Architecture will move on to the Eldon campus once the new building is ready for occupation (the building is due for completion in May 2013). So that means that the staff and students from two schools will move on to the Eldon campus in time to be ready for the start of teaching in September/October 2013.
Art Shop
The Art Shop is moving temporarily to a new location. The new location is smaller but it will stock the usual range of supplies.
The Art Shop in Eldon has to move because it shares a wall with the CCI Space gallery which is being knocked down. To protect staff, students and stock the Art Shop will have to relocate while the wall is secured and made watertight. The Art Shop will likely be moved back to its usual location once these building works are complete.
CCI Space gallery
The CCI Space gallery is being knocked down to make way for the new west wing of the Eldon campus. While the west wing of the Eldon campus is being constructed, public facing exhibition space will be reduced on the Eldon site. The new building is due to be completed in May 2013.
If you would like to exhibit your work, Denise Callender (CCI Promotions Manager) can guide students to a number of recommended external showcase sites. Please email denise.callender@port.ac.uk to find out more.
