Design Classical
Peter Hodson

In this drawing based course, you will be set graphic exercises to learn by doing the elements of the classical language, the proportional ratios which determine their appearance, and how to compose with them to make coherent, rational and harmonious classical designs, when a client asks for them.

This course provides a new (and rare) architectural skill which is interestingly marketable, and also satisfies curiosity about this ancient design language, (the ‘mother tongue’ of western architecture), whose disciplines underlie nearly every aspect of our historical built environment, (including much of the modern; Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe and Alvar Aalto).  It is recommended that the drawing exercises are done using CAD, the course has also proven to be a terrifically effective means of honing even the most experienced CAD users’ mouse skills, owing to the strict disciplines regarding mass and proportion, and also the representation of complex decorative details which the classical language in practice entails.

Morocco Spring School – Jørn Utzon Architecture

Roger Tyrrell

JØRN UTZON SPRING SCHOOL – MARRAKECH, MOROCCO 1st – 9th APRIL 2012
Website: http://www.utzonresearchnetwork.org

Juhani Pallasmaa, Richard Leplastrier and Jan Utzon will lead the inaugural Jørn Utzon Spring Workshop and Symposium to be held in Morocco over Easter 2012. The objective is to explore Utzon’s paradigm in a context he drew inspiration from, by designing a ‘refugium’ in the Atlas Mountains.

Utzon spent some time hiking in the Atlas Mountains and this immersion led to a range of translations of vernacular typologies in projects in Denmark.

Organised jointly by the Jørn Utzon Research Network (JURN), the Utzon Research Center, Aalborg, Denmark and l’Ecole Nationale d’Architecture of Morocco, the event will be further supported by tutors from Denmark, UK, Australia and Tasmania. The workshop, based in Marrakech, will begin with a one-day symposium discussing and defining the Utzon paradigm, before heading in to the Atlas Mountains exploring the site, traditional tectonic materials and processes and indigenous cultures, finally returning to Marrakech to complete the design proposals.

Additional Notes

The workshop is open to students of architecture and related disciplines with a minimum of two years undergraduate experience, academics and practitioners.

The fee includes costs in Morocco for accommodation, local travel, breakfast and dinner.  It also includes attendance at the Utzon symposium.
