SPACE
Fusion Lab Curatorial Programme

Fusion Lab is the curatorial framework that offers opportunities for artists, designers, makers, performers, technologists and industry specialists from any of the creative disciplines to collaborate with CCI students.

The Fusion Lab programme of exhibitions, events and projects will take place in the new exhibition areas known as ‘Space’ on the ground floor of the new extension at Eldon Building and will run for two academic years beginning September 2013.

Cooperation, partnership working and discovery will underpin Fusion Lab, inspiring a series of activities that will form a programme open to the public.  It will foster a spirit of collaboration and has an ambition for a broad audience to engage physically, emotionally and intellectually with the programme.  It will provide opportunities to showcase creativity in a new way to both scholarly and learning audiences.

Exhibition projects in Fusion Lab’s programme will utilise a range of interpretive methods such as artefacts, interventions, commissioned creative works and digital formats to create a dynamic journey and narrative.

Fusion Lab will have a core of funded significant curated and artist, designer, performer or maker-led exhibition projects, including student led shows that will change perspectives and broaden the cultural boundaries, creating emergent learning.  It is hoped that the programme will stimulate debate and produce innovation, new perspectives and a platform for creative excellence, within the CCI Faculty, the University of Portsmouth and externally in the community.

Each exhibition project in the Fusion Lab curated framework will focus on the research, development and making of new work that is jointly produced using interdisciplinary and collaborative design methods.  Each project will encourage exploration into the process of making, new methodologies, participatory workshops with students and the general public.

Fusion Lab projects will offer CCI student opportunities for real life learning in three strands:

  • Researching and creating exhibition designs and interpretive methods of display, working closely with their tutor, curator and technicians
  • Professional practice placements working directly with external artists, designers and makers.  Or students creating work in response (in any discipline) to a professional creative’s practice in a physical or virtual way
  • Exhibitions Assistants or Creative Enablers paid and voluntary placements
