Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

PhD programmes

Our postgraduate research programme is open to both full-time and part-time students. Students are expected to pay their own fees or make other arrangements for them to be paid. The majority of our students are self-funded or sponsored by their employer. Some applicants choose to apply to the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) or the The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) for bursaries.  The deadlines for applications for these awards however is very early on, before the course commences, usually around March/April.  A direct debit scheme is available to spread the payments until March (for October enrolment). Read more about financing postgraduate study.

Integral to the postgraduate research programme is the researcher development programme, offered by the Graduate School. All commencing students are expected to attend this programme, which runs over the course of the PhD programme. For further details of this please visit the Graduate School.
