Francophone Africa
The Francophone Africa research project is working on a reassessment of the legacy of French colonialism in terms of its impact in both the former French colonies and metropolitan France. It adopts a global perspective seeking to go beyond the colonial/ post-colonial binary both geographically and historically.
The project takes an interdisciplinary approach that draws on the study of history, politics and culture. It has strong links with Algeria and Senegal through research projects and consultancy and is constantly seeking to develop its institutional links with other Francophone African countries.
Possible research topics include: Franco-African relations, ideally in a European/ global context, histories of the 1960s that cross the colonial/ post-colonial boundary, decolonisation processes, trans-national networks of people, ideas and/ or political movements (eg. Pan-Africanism), history and memory, nation-building and nation states in Africa since 1960, Anglo-French cooperation in Africa, France and the Mediterranean.
