Research Training In Social Research Methods

All research students in the Faculty of Humanities are required to work towards, or already have obtained formal Masters (M) level training in their relevant subject area, in order to work towards the final award of PhD.   Once you have read the leaflets about research training and the Masters courses if you feel you should be exempt from this course  or parts of it, you should complete a 'research training statement', detailing:

  1. Masters course units attended
  2. Masters course units completed and written on
  3. What those units entailed
  4. Assignment grades
  5. Any other work related or relevant information about research experience

Once we have received this information we can decide if you have obtained enough research related training already and identify any gaps that need to be met. It would be advisable to keep copies of your research training statement and any evidence of your work.

If you wish to apply for exemptions, as part of the Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process, you will be required to submit an application and compose a portfolio detailing relevant supporting evidence, to include essays, certificates etc. Your Director of Studies should be able to assist you with this. This APL application is then approved by 2 assessors and then presented to a formal APL Board.

The course covers issues of research management, method, technique and theory and carries academic recognition in its own right. Students completing this programme will be awarded a separate Postgraduate Diploma in Research Methods. The Social Research Methods research training course runs from October to May each year on Thursdays. The workshop runs from 2-4pm and the taught lectures from 4-6pm and then 6.30-8.30pm. See brochure for detailed information.
