Faculty of Science

About the Faculty

The Faculty is particularly aware of the need for active links between undergraduate programmes and the world of work. We have close working relationships with many industrial and professional employers, and offer effective preparation for careers within the science field and beyond.

The breadth of subject areas within the Science Faculty is reflected in its research programmes. To give just a few examples, research in the Faculty ranges from the corrosion of steel piling to the truthfulness of witness statements, the quantum mechanics of subatomic particles and the study (in Zimbabwe, Wyoming and Ontario) of volcanic rocks. Patents have been filed for anti-cancer drugs and drug delivery systems, and in another laboratory the atom-by-atom structures of protein molecules are being determined using nuclear magnetic resonance methods.

Mature students, and those with non-standard qualifications, are particularly welcome to apply to study science at Portsmouth.
