Profile
Background
Neil joined the University in October 2001 and is currently the Associate Dean (Academic) responsible for overseeing the development and quality of academic provision in the Faculty of Science. He is also a principal lecturer in sport psychology in the Department of Sport and Exercise Science. Following the completion of his BSc (Hons) Physiology and Sports Science degree at the University of Glasgow, Neil completed an MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology and PhD at the University of Chichester. His PhD thesis examined 'The Impact of Butler and Hardy's (1992) Performance Profiling Technique in Sport'. Neil is a BPS Chartered and HCPC Accredited Sport Psychologist and a fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Teaching Responsibilities
Neil is currently involved in teaching sport psychology across all undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He also is actively involved in supervising both undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations in the area of sport psychology.
Research Interests
Neil's recent research interests have centred on the psychological changes that occur in extreme environment endurance sports. These include examining the psychology of single handed sailing during the Velux 5 Oceans and Vendee Globe races, single handed ocean rowing, and Antarctic explorations sponsored by the Fuch's Foundation and British Armed Services. He also continues to research the effectiveness of performance profiling within sport settings. Neil has presented his research at a variety of National (BASES, BPS) and International (NASPSPA; AASP; ISSP) conferences.
