RFI and EMC Measurements

Manufacturers of electrical and electronic products covered by the Electromagnetic Compatibilty Regulations need to comply with European legislation introduced in 1996.

These state that electrical and electronic components made or sold in the UK must be constructed in such a way that they do not cause excessive electromagnetic interference and, similarly, are not unduly affected by such interference.

Centres Of Excellence

Regional Centre for Manufacturing Industry (RCMI)

This DTI funded Centre of Excellence and is dedicated to assisting manufacturing and service companies improve their competitiveness. The Centre is the focal point of our programme to assist manufacturing companies achieve excellence. Recent completed work includes the rapid prototype modelling (LOM & SLA) of household containers, hydraulic test vehicles, electronics instrument panels and boat equipment. In each case, the services have reduced time to market engineering and costs, and have provided visualisation of products at an early stage.

In the area of Precision Measurement and Quality Systems, the RCMI has been awarded a UK Government Teaching Company Scheme (TCS) and is working in association with a local Small to Medium Enterprise (SME) to improve product specifications that will enable export market growth. Another TCS is in preparation in Mechatronics Design & Manufacture.

Mechanical Behaviour of Materials (MBM) Laboratory

The Mechanical Behaviour of Materials (MBM) laboratory has an international reputation for applied research into fatigue and fracture of engineering materials and components, work has been carried out for over 30 years with industrial collaborators, including Rolls Royce plc, the US Air Force, the MOD, QinetiQ, GKN Westland Aerostructures, amongst others. The group thrives on a culture of close collaboration with industry, while sustains research excellence by developing fundamental research programmes supported by the Research Councils (EPSRC, MRC, Royal Society, and UK Charities) as well as industrially sponsored projects.
